Information technology is an excellent career path with a myriad of opportunities, salary potential, job security, and immense growth. From software development and data analytics to cyber security, there are many roles in IT to choose from. Many IT professionals build their skills through online learning and entry level roles to work their way up. What is information technology?

Information technology, commonly referred to as IT, is the use of computers, storage, networking, and physical devices to create, process, store, and secure data. It allows organisations and individuals to access, store and transmit information. IT is crucial in modern society with almost every industry relying on this technology to operate efficiently.   • IT support specialist/technician: An IT support specialist and technician assists in the planning, installation and performance of computer systems and technology. This role helps users solve problems with computers and software, troubleshooting issues and helping to fix any problems with the software and hardware programs. They might do this via phone, email or in person and are often the first point of contact for any computer or IT issues.
  • Cyber security: A cybersecurity career involves protecting an organisation’s networks, digital assets and sensitive information stored on computer systems.   • Cloud computing engineer: This IT professional is responsible for managing cloud -based systems that store data. Cloud computing engineers work in various industries such as technology, finance, and retail usually in desk-based roles within an office or remotely.
  • Software development: Software developers are IT professionals who design, test and maintain applications, systems and programs. They write code and improve programs to meet the needs of the business. They work on everything from mobile apps to operating systems, and focus on creating, troubleshooting, and improving software.
  • Data analytics: As a data analyst, the main role is to identify patterns and insights in data to help organisations make better decisions. They collect data from various sources and clean it to remove any errors or inconsistencies. Their analysis helps businesses improve operations.
  • Web development: As a web developer, this IT specialist creates and maintains websites. They design the layout, ensure the website functions properly, and establish an online presence for a company or business. They ensure it is functional and user friendly across different browsers and devices.
  • IT project management: An IT project manager is responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing information technology projects to achieve specific goals for an organisation. Part of the role is to coordinate teams, ensure projects run smoothly, and manage budgets. As an IT project manager, they liaise with clients and companies with the progress of projects.
  • AI engineer: An AI engineer is a software engineer role that develops, trains and deploys machine learning models and AI systems. These professionals write code that enables websites and applications to interact with users and process data.  They make sure that the AI has the right information and works quickly to answer questions. 

7 ways to get into an information technology career

  1. Choose an area of IT: Identify a specific area of information technology that appeals. That may be cyber security or working as an IT technician. Research the type of work you are interested in, as the career choices in IT are very different. A coder, for instance, is not the same as working on a help desk. When thinking about the type of career, think about your own interests and strengths, whether you enjoy troubleshooting and analysing data or managing systems. You can also look at job demand and growth to help make a practical decision. Remember that IT careers are flexible in nature so you can shift focus on career goals as your interests and skills change.
  2. Explore courses: Learn the fundamentals like what type of course you might need to do for a career in IT. The Certificate III in Information Technology is an excellent place to start. This full-time, 12-month course provides the foundational and practical skills for entry into the technology sector. This TAFE course teaches skills in critical and creative thinking, introductory programming techniques, addressing cyber security requirements, and how to run standard diagnostic tests. These types of entry-level courses are ideal for beginners to gain a comprehensive understanding of hardware,software and networking. Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses can also offer an alternative pathway to further education like a university degree. Short courses are another option for those showing an interest in IT as well as graduates and working professionals who want to gain additional skills for their current role.
