Are you dreaming of a career on the open ocean? This course prepares you for work in the maritime industry, giving you the skills to operate boats up to 12 metres in length in inshore waters. You can also work on smaller support vessels within three nautical miles of a larger vessel.
Through this course, you’ll develop the skills to operate and maintain vessels up to 12 metres safely. You’ll learn seamanship, navigation, handling techniques, environmental and safety compliance, and how to respond to emergencies such as fires, abandon-ship situations, and medical incidents. Training also covers engine operation, basic servicing and maintenance, survival skills at sea, and providing first aid — equipping you with the practical knowledge needed for safe and effective vessel operations.
The learning and assessment of this course will be face-to-face, four days per week, 9.00am to 3.30pm, for five weeks.
Student support classes will be available face-to-face and/or via the virtual classroom, one day per week, 9.00am to 3.30pm, for the first five weeks of the course.
On completion of the five weeks of learning and assessment, one week of student completion support sessions, AMSA Mandated Practical Assessments and an opportunity to register and complete the Short Range Radio Operator Certificate of Competency may be available to assist students. These sessions will be available face-to-face, Monday to Friday, from 9.00am to 3.30pm, at the primary SWTAFE campus of the enrolled intake or onboard the SWTAFE Training Vessel Aqua Jack as required.
Note: Elements of this course may be delivered from another SWTAFE campus or location, including but not limited to Warrnambool, Port Fairy, Portland, and Penshurst. Students may be required to make their own may to these locations, depending on the availability of suitable transport and staffing.

This course involves accredited units. You will be required to complete assessment tasks to demonstrate your underpinning knowledge, skills and attributes to meet the course outcomes. A combination of written, oral and practical assessment strategies will be used in either a classroom, online or workplace environment.
Where units require demonstration of skills in a workplace environment, you will have the opportunity to do this either in your own workplace (where appropriate), through a practical placement, or by using one of the Institute's simulated workshops/classrooms. Detailed information about the types, conduct and dates of assessments will be provided in advance. You will also be provided with information about the opportunity for reassessment and appeal.
