This qualification prepares you for roles in youth and family support, including specialisations in residential and out-of-home care.
Workers in this field operate under broad supervision and within clearly defined organisational guidelines,
service plans, and position specifications.
This course includes 120 hours of practical placement, giving you hands-on experience working with young people and families in real-world settings.
If you are working or would like to work in the Residential and Out of Home Care Sector, this is the minimum qualification you require.
By completing the Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention, you’ll develop the essential skills to support children, young people, and families across a variety of care settings. You’ll learn to work effectively in residential and out-of-home care, family support, and early intervention services, always within safe and ethical practice guidelines.
The course emphasises child safety, wellbeing, and positive behaviour support, while also building your skills in casework, client advocacy, and collaborative practice with other professionals.
Additionally, you’ll gain the knowledge to operate within organisational frameworks, service plans, and legal/ethical standards. This qualification provides the minimum requirement to work in the Residential and Out-of-Home Care sector, ensuring you are job-ready to make a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable children and families.

In order to undertake placement, you must be able to obtain a current Working with Children Check, a police check (with no disclosures) and where necessary the NDIS worker screening. You may also be required to be fully vaccinated for COVID and flu.

This course involves accredited units. You will be required to complete assessment tasks to demonstrate your underpinning knowledge, skills and attributes to meet the course outcomes. A combination of written, oral and practical assessment strategies will be used in either a classroom, online or workplace environment.
Where units require demonstration of skills in a workplace environment, you will have the opportunity to do this either in your own workplace (where appropriate), through a practical placement, or by using one of the Institute's simulated workshops/classrooms. Detailed information about the types, conduct and dates of assessments will be provided in advance. You will also be provided with information about the opportunity for reassessment and appeal.
